Introducing our ASO Tool
The hardest realization that most app developers have when starting out is that the weeks or months (or years!) of building their masterpiece was not enough. They release a new app to the App Store or Google Play only to find that no one downloads it and no one can even find it.
I get this question all the time. “Hey, Eric. I’ve created my app. But now how do I market it?” It’s a simple question with a complicated answer. After doing this for several years, it still surprises me that it is such an afterthought for so many developers.
But, app marketing and making money from apps is possible. We do it and we get a good flow of passive income each day. There are several tactics to use—including search ads, social media outreach, landing pages, etc.
But the biggest and quickest win is App Store Optimization (ASO).
ASO has been around for a few years. It’s not one single task, but a series of considerations when trying to make your presence on the app store easier to find and more compelling for users to purchase or download. Despite all other tactics for being found, most users will find your app through app store search—and this is why ASO is so important.
ASO consists of some of the following general principles:
- Proper use of keywords in your title and description (and keywords field in iTunesConnect)
- Proper use of icon (tested compared to other icons in your niche)
- Proper use of screenshots to entice users to make the download decision
But the first step in optimization is working on your keywords. If you don’t have the right keywords in place, your users will never find your app through search. Then, you can think about whether they would view your app page (because your icon is good enough) or download your app (because your screenshots are good enough).
And keyword research can be very difficult. And…booooooring!!!!
The key is to find a keyword with low competition but high traffic. And this can be hard. For example, you can use an accurate keyword phrase like “fun game” but I can guarantee you there are thousands of apps already with that keyword phrase. So, you need to get more specific.
