This week, I tell you about how I abandoned my principles and tried to re-skin some purchased code for an Overpass app.
App re-skinning is a huge industry and many people suggest newcomers start with app re-skins to learn the markets. Well, it didn’t work out for me.
Everything else we’ve done so far has been original code (with some purchased libraries, but never an entire purchased application). And client work is always custom.
But what kind of app developer would I be if I didn’t try it myself?
Hi, this is A Minute of Overpass. My name is Eric and I make apps. Now this week I want to talk about my first attempt at app re-skinning and how it completely backfired. Okay. So in the app industry there’s this entire methodology called App Re-skinning. So where as a few years ago, you had write all your code for the apps yourself. Now there’s a lot of companies that will set you code for game templates and you can just take them and put in your for game templates and you can just take them and put in your own. So say you get something like Flappy Birds. There’s loads of Flappy Birds clones out there and if you are a designer, you could go out and buy the code just do that. I’ve always been opposed to this and in that sort of thing maybe I’m kinda being a snob in this way. I shouldn’t be you know.. caught up in this position because some people make a lot of money just doing app re-skinning. So this week we bought some code for a Swing Copter. A Swing Copter’s clone and I got my designer just go to redo the whole thing. And I spent some time myself doing it and make it a little bit different and we released a spy theme Swing Copters called Spy Copter Infiltrator and it looks really good. But it’s not that much different. So what happened..well, we got slapped on the wrist last night. We got an email from Google saying this notification.. your app has been rejected reason for removal the title and/or description attempts impersonate or leverage another popular product without permission. So, lesson learned I shouldn’t have been doing in any way. I did. So we gonna go back to just doing our own apps, as we were before. Of course all the client apps are done ourselves but that’s over a minute. My name’s Eric. I work for Overpass. If you’re looking for getting an app developed to either for yourself or for your company, give us a call. I’d love to talk to you. Our number’s 0845 34 1008. Talk to you next week.
