You have an app idea, or your business needs an app and you need someone to build it. So, who do you choose?
Enlisting the help of software development or mobile app development company in the UK can be very daunting. There are hundreds to choose from and new ones being created all the time. And, unlike other service industries (like plumbers or accountants), software developers can vary a considerable degree. While there may be a half dozen ways to install plumbing in your home, there are thousands of ways to code something that does the same thing. So, the decision shouldn’t be taken lightly.
I started Overpass back in 2004. Over the years, we’ve had new clients come to us because they were frustrated with their previous developers. They ask if we can take their existing code and just “fix it.” Sometimes we can, but frequently we need to rewrite code and fix the shaky foundations.
So, you need to make sure you get the right company first.
You want to hire the best software developer in the UK, right? Of course, you do.
Overpass aims to be that company.
And here’s why.
Overpass has been around since 2004, and I have been a software developer for over 20 years. I’ve worked for large and small companies (including Barclays Capital, BNP Paribas, Deutsche Banc, Macmillan Publishing and the BBC). Overpass as a company has had dozens of clients all over the world.
- Documented Processes
In the early days, we handled each project differently. It took a while to find out what works and what doesn’t. Though some costly trial and error, we’ve designed a delivery process that works. Let us know if you’d like us to share this with you.
What good is an excellent application if it looks terrible and no one will use it? We start each project with a design phase. We don’t write a single line of code until you are happy with our clickable prototypes. Most projects fail because the vision a client has is not the same as the vision a developer sees. So, we start with a design, so EVERYONE knows what they are building.
It might just be me, but I hate being used as an advertisement. The apps we build for our clients are not our apps— they belong to our clients. Hence, we don’t have an “our clients” page like most software developers have. Who we’ve worked with is of no consequence if we can’t impress you. However, we are happy to discuss previous clients in our first meeting if you need social proof. Spoiler: you’ll be impressed.
We’re not going to pretend that cost is not an issue. Price is always an issue. We have never met a client who didn’t have a budget they needed to stick to. If money is no object (again, we have not met anyone yet where this is the case), then you can hire the most expensive software developers and hope that they know what they are doing. If you don’t have a big budget, you can hire the cheapest developers and also hope they know what they are going.
We know software developers. We want to provide you with the best value that your budget will allow. We are not the most expensive, and we are not the cheapest. But we aim to be the most valuable.
We work on what I like to call the “plumber model.” When you hire a plumber or a builder to build you a new kitchen, that builder does not own part of your kitchen. And you should be able to hire a new builder for maintenance later if you decide to. We believe in this. The code we write for you belongs to you. If you want to take it to another developer in the future, you can. But, of course, we’re going to try to impress you enough so you will never want to.
